Village Housing announces 'village idiot' program

Residents of the Village learned Friday of the administration’s new program, known as “Village Idiot,” which every week automatically crowns the Village resident with the lowest GPA as the “Village Idiot.” The program is a collaboration between ResLife and the school of Arts and Sciences, which is currently the only participating section of Washington University.

Program manager Jennifer Hughes says that the other Washington University schools are expected to be incorporated within the month. “This gives us an opportunity to recognize a member of the village every week for the contributions that they just aren’t able to make to our community. Maybe it’s a different person, maybe it’s the same loser, I don’t know. I just know that this will be a lot of fun!” she said.

Student response to the plan has been mixed. Nick Morrow, a senior living in Lopata House, was optimistic about the idea. “I can’t wait to see who the first idiot is! I’ve been looking for an outlet for scorn ever since my girlfriend dumped me. I tried scorning her but then I realized that my iPod is still at her place, so there’s no scorning until I get that thing back.”

Others are not so sure that the plan is a good idea. Martin Scott, a junior living in the village, worried about the potential negative effects. “I just sort of feel like it might punish people taking harder classes, or stupid people. Neither of those two groups need any more problems.”
